Shining Stars

Recognising the extraordinary contributions of our people

Spanning more than 40 countries, our 36,000 remarkable employees across RELX unite to support each other, their teams, their business areas, their customers, and their local communities. Every day, they accomplish extraordinary things. We asked our colleagues to nominate people within our organisation who have done something amazing. Here we shine a light on some of their stories, showcasing the profound impact they have on their industries and society.

Fostering a brighter future for animals

I’ve worked at RELX for 13 years. I enjoy working across the RELX businesses globally because the variety of industries and products are interesting, the caliber of RELX employees is top-notch, and the work/life balance is good. I also really appreciate RELX’s commitment to ESG, ERGs, and volunteerism.

There are so many wonderful and worthwhile causes to support, but the majority of my volunteerism centers around animals or the environment. Animals give of themselves and love fully. As sentient beings, I feel they deserve to be treated with compassion and care. The environment impacts each of us and every being, and I can’t think of anything more fundamentally important than to ensure the health and continuation of it.

While there are animal rescue efforts I do individually, a lot of what I do is currently with two non-profits. I’ve volunteered with SICSA, a local animal shelter, for over 16 years and have had the opportunity to do a wide variety of things, including adoptions, dog walking, cat socialization, event committees, fundraising, transport from disaster areas, fostering, and conducting new volunteer orientations. For the last four years, I’ve also been involved with LiFeline Cat Rescue, a local foster-based rescue, for whom I foster (roughly 20-30 cats/year), treat medical needs, help manage day-to-day operations, implement new technology, and serve on the board of directors. On the environmental side of things, I’m on the Dayton Green Team, having been President prior to this year, and a Master Recycler with the local Metroparks. I enjoy implementing environmental practices in my own home and educating others about small (or large) steps they can take.

It’s heartwarming and humbling to be nominated by my amazing colleagues. It’s a testament to how supported I am that they are so familiar with the volunteer activities I do, and that means more than I can express.

Making a positive impact on our communities through kind and honourable action

I have been with the company since 2005, however our division was sold in 2013. I was very excited to return in 2017 as I missed the culture and LexisNexis Risk Solutions' sense of corporate responsibility. There are a lot of intangible benefits LexisNexis provides to their employees.

I have always supported the Red Cross, but with LexisNexis I have also been a Cares Coordinator and Employee Engagement Leader, championing several causes including Just One Africa, North Fulton Community Charities, and the Forsyth Special Olympics. Outside of work, I am a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts America, I volunteer with Mountain Wisdom helping young adults go to a Summer Camp and learn about the outdoors, as well as lead a division of Mentor Discover Inspire, which supports men to be successful leaders in their families, careers, and communities.

I have a written life purpose: “To make a positive impact in my community through kind and honourable action.” Even if I did nothing else, giving blood and making my colleagues smile a little, I feel like I’m accomplishing my purpose.

I was very honored and surprised to be nominated. It is nice to know our efforts are seen. I do not usually post or announce when I do service and try to remain humble, but I have to admit when I got your email, I immediately announced to my co-worker in the next cube, “Hey, someone thinks I’m amazing!”

My advice to those who want to get involved in service is just take action and ignore any doubts about time or ability. People will always make time for you to serve. You make great connections and are emotionally uplifted when you give back to your community.

Working together to help change lives

I started working at RELX in 2014. LexisNexis Risk Solutions is a place where one person can make a difference; together we help change lives. I love that the products we provide helps put life insurance in the hands of a consumer, where it will help support their loved ones at one of the worst moments of their lives.

Life insurance is a hard sale. I try to always keep in mind that when a person has applied for life insurance it means that they realize that someday they are going to die - and the underwriting process needs to be done quickly and thoroughly. Educating an underwriter how our mortality model works and helping them learn how to speak to the results means that more people will get life insurance at a fairer price based on a holistic view of their life. Life insurance has been sold the same way for decades; until Risk Classifier came along the only thing taken into consideration was health…with every conversation we have another underwriter, another carrier understands that there are other contributing factors that also impact mortality.

I am humbled and honored to have been nominated. When I read the nomination, I immediately thought of a quote from a former CEO of Coca Cola, "Value has a value only if its value is valued." We can believe there is value in what we do but having that belief confirmed, it’s a whole other level.

My advice to others is to be available and responsive. Be willing to be a part of something bigger than yourself where there will be doubting customers, as well as supporters. Trust and believe that what you do, and what you don’t do, matters.

Committing to continuous self-improvement

I have worked at RELX for two years. The supportive team environment, making a difference in the lives of others, and helping catch 'bad guys’ are just few of the many reasons I love working here.

My personal commitment has always been continuous self-improvement. I genuinely believe there is something to learn in every situation. One of the highlights of completing my PhD was getting the official publication letter from the Library of Congress. Working full time, raising a family, volunteering, and completing my PhD was no easy feat. Sometimes life just happens right in the middle of everything - you have to learn how to roll with it (find what works for ‘you’), keep your head down, and your eyes on the prize. I have found that anything worth doing does not come easy.

Our youngest is in his ‘Sports Era’ and we love being able to volunteer with the teams and leagues we are part of. Helping children build lifelong relationships, skills, and ‘go-get-it’ mindsets is what drives our dedication.

My advice to others who want to continue their education or start volunteering in their community is to just do it - there will never be a perfect time. Take the first step and everything else will fall into place or off your plate - you decide what gets your time.

Partnering with our customers to drive success

Four years at ICIS have been a rewarding journey. I've thoroughly enjoyed working in the chemical industry and interacting with a diverse range of customers, from traders to producers. My 30+ years of experience working in Japanese, US, and German chemical companies, spanning roles in technical sales & development, marketing, sales, and corporate functions, has been invaluable in this role.

While I primarily support sales activities in Japan and Korea, my background across various functions provides a unique perspective. I've always believed in the importance of understanding a customer's specific needs and challenges before proposing solutions. By listening carefully and tailoring our offerings, we can truly partner with our clients to drive success.

It's been gratifying to be recognized for my contributions, even though opportunities for non-sales roles to receive awards can be limited. I'm committed to continuing to support ICIS and RELX in delivering exceptional value to our customers.

Fostering collaboration and driving growth

I've been part of the RELX family for five and a half enriching years, having joined from PwC where I cut my teeth in financial crime compliance. I'd always dreamt of applying technology innovatively to streamline regulatory compliance, so when the opportunity arose to join Market Planning at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, it felt like destiny calling. What I adore about working here is the boundless potential for collaboration with kindred spirits - folks who share my passion and tirelessly strive to better not just our markets, but society as a whole. It's truly invigorating.

For me, our role in financial crime prevention isn't merely a job - it's a vocation. I find myself constantly immersed in this world, eagerly reading, learning, and exchanging ideas across our organisation and beyond, engaging with clients, regulators, and the media. I see myself as a champion for collaboration, breaking down barriers both internally and externally. Whenever I spot an opportunity to foster collaboration or drive growth, I'm driven by our overarching purpose and willingly go the extra mile. Economic crime isn't just a concept - it's a pressing issue affecting real people. This awareness fuels my passion to make a difference whenever possible.

Being nominated was utterly surreal. I'm surrounded by so many brilliant colleagues who consistently go above and beyond, so this recognition is truly humbling. It's a heartwarming testament to the supportive community we've built here and the genuine appreciation we have for each other's efforts. It's moments like these that remind me of the special bond we share.

My advice to others? Tear down those corporate walls. We're part of an incredible community with immense potential to empower one another and unlock our collective capabilities. Collaboration is the key to helping others. Step outside your comfort zone, connect with people beyond your immediate circle, and be curious about their work. Think creatively about how you can add your unique touch to their canvas. That's where the real magic happens.
