colleagues

This year has been a challenge for us all. A year that nobody could have predicted, one that has been full of constant worry and uncertainty about what the future holds. Some of the most significant changes have been the adjustments made to people's working lives. At one stage, 97% of RELX's 33,000 employees worldwide were working from home.

For those of us who are used to a bustling office, sitting among daily chats about the weather, the new must-watch TV series on Netflix and weekend plans, it has been an unusual experience. While many had thought this would only last for a short period of time, a few months at most, many are still grasping this new way of ‘remote’ working.

However, as we have shifted over the past year to this entirely new way of life, there has been one major upside that has been making this transition a little easier - pets, or shall we say, ‘our new colleagues.'

The benefits of pet ownership for health and wellbeing have been well-documented and widely accepted for many years; reducing loneliness and anxiety, providing daily structure, and lifting mood to name just a few. Never have our pets' companionship been so meaningful and appreciated. Pets are proving a lifesaver for many, providing consistency, joy and companionship in challenging times. The mental and physical advantage of having a pet is proving to be particularly pertinent during this stressful time. This has been no different for us at RELX.

As seen in this 'behind the scenes' photo (first photo on the right), Darren Sugrue from Elsevier had a helping hand from Frodo while taking a new LinkedIn photo during lockdown. Although, when taking a closer look, it turns out Frodo is in fact waiting patiently for his walk and taking more notice of the SLR remote control in Darren’s hand, thinking it is a new toy.

While Leo (second photo on the right) has been very busy helping Kristen Salierno from Reed Exhibitions answer Zoom calls and draft responses to emails. It looks like he has got his new working set up 'just right.' Besides that, Leo has mainly been a huge source of comfort and joy for Kristen. He remains very goofy and reminds her to laugh even when times are tough.

No matter what, our pets have managed to bring fun and happiness to our lives in spite of everything; our ‘new colleagues’ have been hard at work keeping our spirits lifted. Let's take a look at what they have exactly been up to that has kept us smiling and cheerful.

"I have found that having Cooper around in these challenging times has been really helpful for my mental health. He keeps me on a steady routine and provides stress relief when things feel overwhelming. As seen here, he loves to jump into my desk chair and manage my emails when I step away for coffee breaks" - Tracy Rhine [RELX]

there have been new additions to the family...

...of the furry and not-so-furry kind

Meet Pebble, the newest member of Chris Bernard’s [LexisNexis] family. Pebble is a very social cat and likes to be around people. He also enjoys helping Chris with work and is angling for a key paw-sition at PSL. He always likes to check out the Lexis PSL Financial Services webpage. As you can see, one of his favourite activities is playing with his toys

...but we haven't forgotten our longtime companions

Big or Small

Turpin has been Jane Baldwin's [LexisNexis Risk Solutions] house guest for just over 13 years, alongside his sister Ike. (This is what happens when you allow your child to name your pets!) On a warm sunny day he’ll be out patrolling the garden and fields, but if it’s grey or rainy he’s Jane's work buddy, curled up on her desk or on the spare bed which sits behind her. However, being middle aged, Turpin likes a bit of peace and quiet and is liable to throw Jane the odd dirty look during Teams calls when she's talking too much - i.e. most of the time!

and Nap time has become the most important part of the day

Work Hard, Sleep Harder

Our animal companions have continued to help us every single day while we have adjusted to working from home. They help us stay productive and remind us to exercise and take breaks; remaining (very close) by our sides. Their company is more important than ever. Here a few ways in which they have helped some of our colleagues at RELX.

"My pit bull, Lanty (see first picture on the right) mostly sleeps all day, but she occasionally takes a break to request a belly rub or butt scratch, or to bark at passerbys outside while I’m on a call. Having her around all day relaxes me – except for the aforementioned barking" - Kelly Skelton, Elsevier

"We rescued Ozzy during the onset of Covid and he has gotten so close to our young boys that they are all like brothers now. Ozzy has helped our family teach our boys about responsibility and offered them loyal companionship, as many of their regular activities have been off limits for months” - Adam Balsam, Reed Exhibitions

"Our dog Gracie is obsessively and relentlessly cheerful, a great spirit that roams our house and reminds all of us stuck working at home that life is still full of magic." - Steven Ramay, Elsevier

"Eli has been keeping my spirits up through all the craziness this year.  Being with him is the only time of the day I get to refocus my mind and 'forget' about all the other things on my to-do list and the craziness going on in the world these days.  Spending time with Eli refreshes my mind and gets me going again!" - Meghan Margewicz, Reed Exhibitions

"This is Ash, the best office mate ever. He’s a 9 and a half year old Brittany (see second picture on the right.) When I am working in my home office, he curls up under my desk. He’s great for my mental health offering (quiet) companionship and comfort. He listens to my frustrations and jubilations equally. He is quick to insist on attention by climbing onto my lap whenever I start to forget to be calm and confident. Then he happily goes right back to his puppy dreams - job well done." - Kristin Blumenschein, LexisNexis Risk Solutions

they have Celebrated those special moments AND achievements with us

Here is Julie S. Smiths' [Intelligize, LexisNexis] three-year-old Golden Retriever, Copper. During the pandemic he’s been a constant source of joy and companionship. And even though she runs multiple times a week, that’s often the only thing that gets Julie out of the house. Except Copper. Walks with him give Julie time to enjoy the fresh air and nice (albeit hot) weather. He’s always happy to see her and never gets bored playing with his mama

and constantly kept themselves and us active...

...most times by causing trouble and getting up to no good

Instead of giving Serafina Trombetta [Reed Exhibitions] sad eyes in the morning while she leaves for work, Minnie can’t wait to get into their new “routine” as she fits in some morning cuddles and watches Serafina go through all her emails. She then gets even more excited about lunch outside, finds her favourite ball, and plays a game of fetch. She is always right by Serafina's side and we're not sure who enjoys it more!

or Shall we say staying 'active'...

...most of the time

Here is one of Kasia Zuk's [Elsevier] life saviours who has been supporting her for the past few months. Kiki is a ten-year-old cat who accompanies her during her work outs. She makes sure Kasia follows the instructions well and takes enough breaks. She has made Kasia's life much easier!
