So you've landed an interview for a new job at relx - Congratulations! now what?

Whether you are new to the job market, a seasoned professional interviewing for your dream job at a new company or looking to make moves within your current organisation, these tips can help you get a job with us.

If you do an internet search on how to prepare for an interview you'll find hundreds of lists that will tell you the same key things: research the company, match your resume to the job description, look presentable, be pleasant. While these are all true and good, the hiring manager will want to know more about who you are and how you can provide meaningful value to their team.

Our managers are working hard to ensure that your employee experience journey is optimal from your first interview through to your thriving career at RELX.

To attract, retain and develop the best people, organisations must not only do things better, but they must also do them differently; making sure that at every step they put their best foot forward in the areas people care most about. Organisations must make the whole experience of being an employee a positive one from first contact.
Rose Thomson, Chief Human Resources Officer at RELX

So here at RELX, we have pulled together the collective wisdom of some of our experienced interviewers, hiring managers and talent acquisition leaders to bring you expert guidance to help you land your next big opportunity.

Happy interviewing.

#10 Do meaningful research

It's easy to just read the about page on the company website but to really understand the culture and values of the business you want to work for, you'll want to dive a bit deeper. At RELX we've built a repository for all of our business and people content including stories, videos, reports, podcasts and more called Perspectives. This should also give you a strong sense of what it's really like to work here. Use examples that you find via these resources to convey your interest in the company's initiatives and how you can specifically add value to what they are doing.

#9 Perfect your
elevator pitch

Tailoring your resume to the job description is great and reasonable advice, but you won't have time to run through every line of your resume during your interview. Come up with a concise yet thoughtful description of your experience and expertise. Think 2-3 minutes that will grab the attention of your interviewer and make them want to learn more about what you can bring to our organisation.

#8 Get all your
ducks in a row

If you're not used to this bit of jargon, 'getting all your ducks in a row' means to organise your tasks and schedule so that you are ready for the next step. Don't underestimate the value of being punctual and well prepared. Make sure your calendar is blocked off for an ample amount of time surrounding your interview in case you hit traffic on the way there or are having trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi. The rule of thumb is to be 15 minutes early for in-person interviews and at least a few minutes early for virtual ones. This will also help to ease your mind as you enter your interview so that you're not scrambling at the last minute. Less stress = a better chance of success.

#7 Talk about
inclusion and collaboration

RELX serves customers in more than 180 countries and has offices in about 40 countries. We know that an inclusive workplace made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and ideas is what drives true innovation for our customers. Sharing your experiences working with diverse teams or managing cross-functional projects will prove your ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a variety of people, business areas and cultures. If you've had the opportunity to work globally, sharing those experiences can't do any harm.

#6 Express your
innovative spirit

In most interviews you're likely to be asked to "describe a time when you had to solve a difficult problem at work." This is a great moment to share how you've innovated in your previous experience. "An innovative spirit is a mindset that actively seeks change rather than waiting to adapt to change." Use an example of how you came up with a creative solution to a problem by implementing a new programme or tool or share how you found a more cost-effective or less time-consuming way to reach your goal. These examples will demonstrate your openness to try out new ideas and be resourceful. It also proves your willingness to grow and evolve.

#5 Be curious,
enthusiastic and optimistic

Having questions in mind before your interview is key, your thoughtful curiosity will make your interest in the role and the company feel more genuine. Your enthusiasm about the opportunity should shine through when answering and asking questions. And remember to be optimistic, you may not know if you've landed the role yet but your optimism will show that you see a positive and successful future for the company with you in it.

#4 Focus on
outcomes

Employers love to see that you have a strong propensity for action and can deliver results. Did you drive new traffic to a website or win business that increased revenue? During your interview you'll want to quantify your achievements with key data and share the decision-making process you used to garner such outcomes. This will help showcase your skills and expertise.

#3 Listen and
learn

You've spent all this time preparing the perfect answers to questions you thought would be presented, but don't forget to actively listen during your interview. Listening to your interviewer is just as important as answering their questions. This will help you stand out from the bunch who overshared and didn't properly answer the questions that were being asked of them. When you let the interviewer speak, you can better articulate how you match what they are truly looking for.

#2 Highlight your
unique contributions

Similar to when you're applying to university, sharing your extracurricular activities and interests helps to show how well-rounded you are as a candidate. Perhaps you regularly volunteer in your community, get involved with employee resource groups, participate in team sports or have a special talent -- these are great qualities to share during your interview. At RELX we pride ourselves on our unique contributions to society so take stock of your own unique contributions and use them to your advantage.

#1 Be yourself

The best and easiest way to stand out in an interview is to just be yourself. If you get the job, it will consume a large amount of your time and you should feel like you can always be yourself - quirks and all. Show your personality by sharing your interests and what is important to you in and outside of work. You're more likely to make a lasting impression when you are just being you.
