Some of our innovation stories

Lexis+ AI

Transforming the work of legal professionals

Generative AI is transforming legal work and the industry as we know it. LexisNexis Legal & Professional’s Lexis+ AI is a generative AI solution featuring conversational search, intelligent legal drafting, insightful summarisation, and document upload and analysis capabilities. The solution is supported by state-of-the-art encryption and privacy technology to keep sensitive data secure.

Lexis+ AI answers are grounded in one of the world’s largest repositories of accurate and exclusive legal content from LexisNexis, minimising the risk of invented content or hallucinations, and checking all citations against Shepard’s, a powerful legal citation tool to ensure citation validation.

Lexis+ AI excels at transforming legal work because it uses subject matter experts to fine-tune models for specific legal use cases. It uses prompt engineering that analyses a customer’s question and provides additional instructions to improve the model and integrates vast amounts of case law, legal data, news and other content capabilities using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to extend the capability of a model.

ClinicalKey AI

Unlocking the power of AI in clinical decision support

Elsevier’s ClinicalKey AI helps physicians access accurate evidence-based information at the point of care by combining Elsevier’s large corpus of trusted medical information with advanced AI technology to deal the overwhelming volume of complex cases that clinicians are required to manage daily. The solution has been designed to provide high-quality curated content and constantly refreshed evidence-based research to help clinicians in offering optimal patient experiences whether in a small clinic or a large hospital.

Conversational search means physicians can address challenging patient cases by getting access to a combination of the latest research, reference textbooks, clinical overviews, drug information and much more that clinicians trust. Physicians will also see citation links and underlying documents used to answer their questions to review the primary source documents. Finally, ClinicalKey AI will support follow-up questions and will recommend related ones for the physicians to consider. All content is licensed so users and institutions can feel confident in the information they are using.

Scopus AI

Empowering researchers with novel ways to discover scientific information

Researchers, especially those early in their careers and those working across disciplines, face significant challenges and complexity in their daily work, including an ever-growing volume of data, prevalent misinformation and increasing workloads.

Elsevier’s Scopus AI, based on over 29,000 academic journals from more than 7,000 publishers worldwide, helps them understand and explore a particular topic quickly, make connections across disciplines and collaborate with others to ensure the research has greater academic and societal impact. Scopus AI provides easy to read digestible summaries, with links to research papers and the ability to go deeper in seconds.

Scopus AI uses OpenAI’s GPT and other LLM technology in combination with Elsevier’s own technologies. It uses fine-tuned mini language models for vectorising abstracts and is hosted on Azure. Its front end is built with a mix of JavaScript and CSS, while Python, Java, Elasticsearch and Langchain are utilised in the backend.

Cirium

Shaping the future of aviation

Cirium empowers the aviation industry with unparalleled data and analytics. With insights from over 2,000 data sources flowing into its central data platform, The Cirium Core, Cirium delivers unique, refined intelligence tailored to the industry’s needs.

The Cirium Core processes millions of data points daily from all corners of the air travel industry, transforming them for real-world applications to provide a complete, 360-degree view of any flight. This robust dataset includes aircraft fleets, flight status, schedules, aeronautical data, traffic, and fare information—offering essential insights for any travel or tourism-connected business to drive informed decision-making.

One of Cirium’s newest offerings is EmeraldSky. This advanced solution combines Cirium’s extensive data, analytics, and cutting-edge mathematical modeling to provide precise calculations of CO₂ emissions and fuel burn for every flight and each individual aircraft seat. By factoring in service class and seat space based on the airline’s specific layout, EmeraldSky offers the most accurate historical and predictive emissions data available—empowering the aviation industry on its journey toward net-zero by 2050.

RELX CO2 Hub

Counting the cost of carbon

The RELX CO2 Hub was launched in early 2022 and is a platform that collects, analyses, and visualises data about RELX’s emissions on a series of live dashboards. The aim is not only to measure and report on CO2 emissions, but also to change behaviours to cut the company’s emissions to as close to zero as possible.

The RELX CO2 Hub’s thirty-one daily refreshed dashboards include buildings, cloud and data centres, commuting, flights, homeworking, hotels, supply chain and others. Employees can even see their individual travel footprints, right down to individual flights and hotel stays.

The Hub also includes flight emissions data, thanks to aviation analytics company Cirium, part of RELX. Cirium has developed a new methodology based on fuel-burn rather than distance-travelled. It factors in a vast array of variables, including actual flight time (more relevant than distance in determining how much fuel was used), aircraft model, aircraft age, engine type, number of seats, passenger load, cargo load, weather, taxi time – even how long a plane idles on the runway or circles in the air. The level of precision and accuracy of Cirium’s calculations, based on fuel-burn as opposed to distance-travelled, has been validated by major carriers.

LexisNexis Digital Identity Network

Cybercrime detection and online fraud prevention in near real-time

The global cybercrime industry generates revenues that rival some of the largest economies of the world. Cybercriminals leverage stolen data such as login credentials and payment details for fraudulent activity on online banking and e-commerce sites in the wake of large-scale data breaches. To compound the problem, cybercriminals are able to dramatically increase the efficiency and scale of such attacks by using bots and botnets to run massive identity testing sessions to penetrate fraud defences.

The LexisNexis Digital Identity Network crowdsources intelligence from millions of daily consumer interactions including logins, payments, and new account applications across thousands of global businesses. Companies contribute the data in an anonymous and secure way, essentially creating a vast global repository of information on every single transaction processed on a yearly basis.

eyeWitness to Atrocities

Helping bring war criminals to justice

In 2015 LexisNexis Legal & Professional and the International Bar Association (IBA) launched the eyeWitness to Atrocities app, which collects, verifies, catalogues and stores images for use as evidence in a court of law while safeguarding the individuals who have taken them. As a result, footage from app users is helping the investigations and analyses of organisations such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, as well as European war crimes units, domestic courts, and international police forces.

eyeWitness has captured over 65,000 photo, video and audio files across high-risk regions, and has submitted over 71 dossiers to accountability mechanisms around the world so far. In September 2018, a military tribunal in Bukavu (Democratic Republic of the Congo) condemned two high-ranking commanders for murder and torture constituting crimes against humanity. These convictions represent the first time eyeWitness app video footage was submitted to proceedings as incriminating evidence, and an all-time first in the DRC.

In December 2016, eyeWitness won the Geneva Centre for Security Policy Prize for Innovation in Global Security. The Prize for Innovation in Global Security recognizes individuals or organizations that have created innovative solutions that address international security challenges.
