"Prioritising the physical and mental health of our loved ones, friends and colleagues has become more important than ever before. At RELX, we care deeply that our people stay healthy and well. That's why we've put in place dedicated health and wellbeing programmes and resources that cater to the diverse needs of our global workforce. A network of more than 100 wellbeing champions work year-round to support our colleagues and organise virtual and on-site wellbeing activities."
The collective mission of our programmes, Living Well supporting Risk people, MindLife for Elsevier and Thrive for LexisNexis Legal & Professional and RX, is to engage and help our people optimise their mental, emotional, physical and professional wellbeing. Each of these individual programmes contribute to the overall success of RELX’s wellness offering. We’d like to shed light on the wide array of wellbeing initiatives across our organisation which support our mind, body and community.

Mental health resources and programmes
In today's ever-evolving and fast-paced world, we recognise that there is a general concern about the pressures that can have an impact on mental health and wellbeing. By integrating mental health training, awareness and resources across RELX, we aim to create an environment where open dialogue about mental health is encouraged. This approach seeks to not only reduce stigma but also nurture a more positive and empathetic workplace culture.
We have mental health first aiders across our organisation who act as a point of contact for any colleague who is experiencing a period of adverse mental health or emotional distress. This interaction could range from having an initial conversation through to supporting the person to get appropriate help. As well as in a crisis, mental health first aiders are valuable in providing early intervention help for someone who may be developing a deterioration in their mental health.
Employees who are trained mindfulness and meditation practitioners regularly facilitate live sessions for their peers to join. During these events we have seen individuals share their stories of living with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, dealing with grief and bereavement, supporting loved ones and maternal mental health. You can read this moving, first-hand story by one of our colleagues as he shares his personal experience of anxiety.
"As a mental health champion for RELX, I have organised events to get people together such as a mindfulness session, a run club and quizzes," says Mai Trinh, head of tax reporting, risk and reputation at RELX. "What I love about RELX’s wellbeing programmes is that they provide a platform for people to connect and make work a happier place."
"I have been hosting regular mindfulness meditation sessions for our employees through Elsevier's Mindlife programme for four years now and it all started from a personal desire to help colleagues. I am from Italy which means that back in March 2020 I was among the first Elsevier employees to be in full lockdown. I knew what I was suffering soon would hit others so I opened a Zoom room and started doing what I usually did every morning; mindfulness meditation,” says Claudio Colaiacomo, vice president of global academic relations at Elsevier. “Soon participation soared and I found myself meditating with hundreds of colleagues from around the world. Today that streak of meditations continues through MindLife where we now have a group of colleagues delivering daily mindfulness sessions accommodating different time zones. People find comfort knowing there’s a group of their colleagues who care for their mental wellbeing.”

Elsevier recently won an award for ‘Mental Health UK Large Employer of the Year’. "This award recognised our MindLife programme as the best mental health and wellbeing programme of the year which focuses on recovery and preventative solutions," says Rebecca Stockdale, executive assistant and MindLife programme lead at Elsevier.
"When working with my peers, one of the things we say about Elsevier is how much it cares for our wellbeing. We recognise that this isn't something all companies do. When you feel supported and heard, you feel safe. When you feel safe, you can speak up, take risks, try new things," says Susan Ikeda, senior editorial project manager at Elsevier. "Healthy wellbeing at work naturally flows into regular life. It's the ripple effect - if you're in a good place then those around you are too and it ripples from there. Normalising wellbeing as part of work makes work less stressful - or at least manageably stressful (you're not alone!)"
We offer employee assistance programmes to all our employees, providing professional counselling to help them and their family members with personal or work-related issues that may impact their health or well-being. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
"In addition to our core mental health programme we also look to our senior leadership team to destigmatise mental health in the workplace by organising annual senior leadership discussion panels which focus on mental health and their personal experiences," noted Alison Fox, wellbeing programme manager at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. "These sessions have been the most attended of all the events we’ve organised. We have a mental health employee resource group (ERG) which people can join to chat about personal issues and struggles. The more we’ve talked about mental health, from sessions about suicide, neurodiversity, anxiety and stress, the more our people feel accepted, understood and educated."

To further promote a healthy and happy culture, we’ve partnered with Headspace, a global leader in mindfulness and meditation. Employees across RELX have free access to the Headspace app which offers resources such as storytelling, breathing exercises and guided meditations on everything from stress to sleep.

“The Headspace app has helped me immensely," says Rebecca Iali, customer engagement consultant, government at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. "Mindfulness meditation has been integral in my wellbeing. It’s important to me to practice daily. When challenges happen, I’m much better equipped to handle adversity that comes my way. Breathing is the most practical way to move through challenges and turn them into opportunities.”
Energise your body
Physical health resources and fitness classes
Taking care of our physical health results in increased energy levels, and a better ability to accomplish our daily goals. Eating well, prioritising exercise and getting good-quality sleep are the key cornerstones to giving our bodies what they need to support us to lead long and healthy lives and reduce the risk of developing a number of diseases. And taking care of our bodies helps care for our minds. One of the best reasons to look after our physical health is because it will help improve our overall mental health and wellbeing.
Our wellbeing teams across RELX work hard to keep a regular cadence of virtual and in-person activities and events planned for our colleagues around the world. Our wellbeing champions play a pivotal role in delivering localized wellbeing initiatives, all of which are funded through our programmes. Our Living Well, MindLife and Thrive wellness programmes come together each June to celebrate RELX World Wellbeing Week with a wide range of activities to nurture both body and mind.
"I made a firm commitment to myself in August of 2020 to get healthy, and saw the Desk to 5K (D25K) challenge advertised shortly after I started to introduce exercise and dietary changes," says Kristin Blumenschein, business senior project manager at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. "I signed up for the walk to jog program, but didn’t really expect that I would be able to finish the full 6 weeks – but I did. I also signed up for the fitness classes. At the end of the D25K I had lost weight and realized a new love of jogging. I’ve now lost over 40 pounds and am more focused on maintaining and toning. My doctor is thrilled. I’ve seen and felt the improvement in my physical and mental health."
"Three years ago we had our first physical exercise competition, in which I started exercising every day to encourage the group in the competition and, after the competition ended, I never stopped exercising," says Karina Amaral, payroll and benefits coordinator at LexisNexis Risk Solutions in Brazil. "I was very overweight, so I underwent medical monitoring, reduced diet and managed to lose 50 kilos. Today I am a new person and I practice physical activity three to five times a week."
The Brazil team launched "Solidarity Soccer - In the mood for the World Cup." 23 employees took part in the event with each participant donating 2kg of food to a charity of their choice.
Some employees have used our virtual fitness classes to restore their physical health after injury.
"In 2019 I shattered my left ankle. I spent the full year in recovery and basically had to relearn how to walk," says Lisa Hayes, senior communications lead, innovation at RELX. "I had finally finished my physical therapy in early 2020 and started to return to the gym to continue to rebuild my strength and balance when the pandemic hit. I used the Culture of Fit classes as my continued physical therapy instead. Thanks to those workouts, I can now fully bend my ankle, squat, and kneel on the floor with no assistance."
One of the biggest issues is inactivity. It's easy to become stuck to your home-office desk and before you know it hours have gone by and you have not moved from your chair. Group fitness classes are helping our colleagues stay active during the day and build a sense of community.
"It is great to be able to promote and take part in company well-being activities to benefit my own and others' wellbeing," says Heidi Finch, senior editor, ICIS Editorial. "I have participated in the company's lunchtime fitness classes and Living Well activities for some time and find it is good for my mental health/wellbeing and important to break up the day with some movement! The Living Well activities also encourage a good team/community spirit."
Wellness at RX yoga session
Earlier this year, RX UK hosted a successful 'Wellness at RX' day, which began with a serene yoga session led by Liz Broughton, Head of Talent & Capability at RX, followed by a Headspace silent meditation session facilitated by Emma Dengate, RX's Global Health & Safety Manager. The event continued with a panel discussion on 'Balancing Work and Life Effectively,' initiated by Kerry Price, Managing Director at RX UK, and moderated by Gaby Appleton, Chief Digital Product Officer at RX. The panel featured insightful contributions from Rosi Baran Sena, Sophie Gilligan, Gloria Vezzoli, Merilyne Davies, and Jonathan Heastie.
"It was a great opportunity to learn more about the support RX offers their employees and the people behind these initiatives," said Milagros Gamero, Product Marketing Manager at RX. "I was also very excited to discover that the kindness I'd already noticed in my closer colleagues is actually embedded across the RX culture."
Supporting our community
giving back & Community building
Staying connected has never been more important. We have always ensured our programmes bring people together to foster a sense of belonging and community. We want to make sure that we enable our colleagues to support their communities in the best way possible.
The community element allows us to connect with one another to share our stories and interests, whether that is through conversations about mental health or menopause, learning a new skill or joining a fitness challenge. Working with our local Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to provide intersectional events means we are regularly creating safe spaces for our employees. This also allows us to promote the incredible work our people do through the RELX Cares programme. A network of more than 230 dedicated Cares Champions ensures the vibrancy of our community engagement.
"The LNRS ‘pause for performance’ initiative where we can take time each week to learn or be active and the RELX Cares ‘You Move, We Donate’ initiative where RELX donates $10 to charity for each person who gets out and takes some time out to exercise have both helped me to focus on my well-being and my community. It’s also improved my performance," says Loretta Manning, Digital Marketing Specialist at Cirium. "Giving back to the community I live in means a lot to me and RELX Cares inspires me to do just that!"

A menopause ERG was established to support colleagues within our organisation who may be struggling with perimenopause and menopause. It is the first ERG to be available RELX-wide. The ERG and its dedicated menopause mentors help to encourage conversation in the workplace to remove the stigma and taboo around menopause.
"I am a menopause mentor and we organise informal MenoCoffeeChats where people come to listen, share, learn, connect and feel less isolated. Our colleagues appreciate the chance to validate their feelings and enjoy being part of a community where they feel supported and empowered," says Rosi Sena Baran, Executive Assistant at Elsevier and MindLife and RELX Cares Champion.

“The MenoCoffeeChat was a chance to meet more colleagues, share experiences and gain support which is so vital in the workplace when it comes to menopause," says Ruth Scaife, Portfolio Head of Sales at RX. "It's great to work for a company that invests and focuses on health and wellbeing. A happy, healthy you makes a difference!”
Working with site leads across the United States, our Cares Champions and ERGs created an internal cross-site ‘Minutes of Movement' challenge to promote wellness and to raise awareness for a key RELX Cares partner, the American Heart Association (AHA). Our Dayton, Ohio and Raleigh, North Carolina sites have been involved with the AHA for several years and are active participants in local Heart Walks. A couple of our colleagues have shared their personal stories about why they contribute their time and energy to this important project.
"I am a heart surgery survivor. At age 40 during a physical, my doctor discovered I had a hole in my heart called Atrial Septal Defect. Left untreated this condition leads to chronic heart disease; so I immediately had open heart surgery. Today, I am in better health than ever before! I had great doctors, hospital staff and the strong support of family and friends," says Dave Borchers, program manager, global business, content and shared services at LexisNexis Legal & Professional. "RELX is a company that believes in and promotes opportunities for good health and they provided the extra support when I needed it. Throughout my journey as a survivor, I was the beneficiary of advances in research and treatment methodologies advocated by the AHA. This organisation’s mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. I am a living example of the importance and impact of the AHA’s mission."

"My daughter was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) in 2008 and had successful open heart surgery at age 4. This experience had a tremendous impact on our family, and we saw first-hand how many other families were also affected by CHDs," says Ryan Eberhardt, desktop digital experience engineer at LexisNexis Legal & Professional. "The Heart Walk is a wonderful way to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke and to help other families who are going through similar experiences! RELX has always promoted healthy opportunities for employees to be fit and through challenges like the Heart Walk, it has also helped us encourage our families and friends to be healthy too."
