Top innovations at RELX

Helping our customers change the world

Innovation is "the introduction of new things, ideas or ways of doing something".

In part one, we look at five innovations at RELX that are helping to change the world.

In the other parts of this story, now available below, we look at more innovations at RELX that are the fruit of collective genius and that are helping to change the world.

1Delivering on the promise of precision medicine in cancer care: ClinicalPath

The concept of precision medicine, in which health care “takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person” has long existed but was held back by the lack of data and available technology. AI, big data and clinical decision tools are now contributing to big advances in precision medicine in health care. Cancer care is no exception.

Elsevier’s ClinicalPath, the MedTech Breakthrough 2019 and 2020 award winner for best computerised decision support solution, is delivering on the promise of precision medicine in cancer care treatment.

ClinicalPath provides oncology care teams with a clearer path to clinical decision making by combining advanced technology with evidence-based content.

“It’s an exciting time to be in oncology, but fast developments also make it challenging for providers to keep up with the latest research,” said John Danaher, global president, Clinical Solutions, Elsevier. “ClinicalPath offers current, evidence-based guidance at every decision point to help providers move toward the ‘single best’ treatment for each patient presentation. We support cancer centers with a predictable approach so they can standardise treatment, run successful clinical research programmes and thrive in value-based care, on their path to optimal clinical and financial outcomes.”

James Johnson, managing director of MedTech Breakthrough said: “Elsevier’s ClinicalPath is delivering a true ‘breakthrough’ in cancer care. For example, in precision oncology, ClinicalPath helps physicians identify the appropriate biomarkers to test and offers companion treatment guidance. Institutions receive analytics on testing rates and adoption of recommended therapies to support quality programmes and reimbursements. Most importantly, cancer patients benefit from opportunities to receive life-changing therapies.”

2Cybercrime detection and online fraud prevention in near real-time:
Helping make trust and identity decisions

The global cybercrime industry generates revenues that rival some of the largest economies of the world. Cybercriminals leverage stolen data such as login credentials and payment details for fraudulent activity on online banking and e-commerce sites in the wake of large-scale data breaches. To compound the problem, cybercriminals are able to dramatically increase the efficiency and scale of such attacks by using bots and botnets to run massive identity testing sessions to penetrate fraud defences.

The LexisNexis® Digital Identity Network® crowdsources intelligence from millions of daily consumer interactions including logins, payments, and new account applications across thousands of global businesses. Companies contribute the data in an anonymous and secure way, essentially creating a vast global repository of information on every single transaction processed on a yearly basis.

Using this information, the ThreatMetrix solution creates a unique anonymous ‘digital identity’ for each user by analysing the myriad of connections between devices, login locations, anonymised personal information and even speed of mouse movements. Behaviour that deviates from a trusted digital identity can be accurately identified in real time, alerting customers to new users who may be using stolen identity data, obfuscating their location or attempting to sign up for multiple accounts from the same device.

3Bringing a 360-degree view of flight and data to a private cloud:
How Cirium is helping to reinvent air travel

For some time, the global air travel industry has needed digital transformation. This became even more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic which created the sharpest decline in air traffic and demand in the industry's history. As the pandemic spread and the industry scrambled to react, it exposed areas of weakness in operational data, connectivity, and shared information sources. The extent of the crisis is acting as a catalyst to speed up the drive to modernise legacy systems and processes.

Cirium’s strengths lie in helping the industry to leverage data and analytics. Unlike any other company in the industry, Cirium has over 2,000 sources of data feeding into its new datalake – The Cirium Core. The Cirium Core is the heart of Cirium. It is a unique mix of proprietary technologies, skills, and processes.

The Cirium Core ingests millions of pieces of data every day from every corner of the air travel industry and transforms them for real-world use to provide a 360-degree view of flight. The foundational datasets include fleet, cost, flight, schedule, fare and trip as well as physical flight data which, when combined with the foundational datasets, provides unparalleled access to information for any business connected to travel and tourism.

One of Cirium's newest offerings - Cirium Sky - creates a new level of value and data fluency as part of a private cloud solution for major clients. For example, this solution can accelerate an airline's digital transformation strategy, which has benefits to the industry as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic especially, but also for the traveler. It is a unique opportunity to reinvent the way we travel and experience travel.

4Transforming learning for nursing students with virtual reality: Elsevier's Simulation Learning System with VR

The nursing community is under pressure, further exacerbated by Covid-19. Healthcare leaders and higher education institutions are under increasing budgetary and regulatory pressures to simultaneously meet patient demands by an aging population and advance treatments. They also face a nursing shortage and need to increase capacity necessary for training more nurses.

In addition, many first-time nurses struggle to transition from the academic setting to the professional setting, leading to clinical errors. These pressures contribute to a significant retention problem, with some hospitals seeing turnover rates as high as 35 percent within the first year of employment.

Nursing schools are also facing unprecedented challenges in delivering high quality clinical experiences necessary for training practice-ready nurses. In-person labs and clinical rotations have been limited during Covid-19, making it challenging to ensure students gain clinical reasons skills through realistic interactions.

To help address this challenge and ensure learning continuity, Elsevier, in partnership with SimX, a top developer of advanced virtual reality simulation trainings for healthcare professionals, recently launched a new digital solution that combines cutting-edge virtual reality technology that brings realistic virtual reality simulations to nursing schools.

The advanced Simulated Learning System for RN with Virtual Reality (SLS with VR), features hundreds of virtual reality patient and lab-based scenarios, including Covid-19 simulations, which allow nursing students to gain valuable experience and enhance their clinical judgment skills. Each scenario challenges the user to make decisions in real-time that have direct patient implications and mirror the fast-paced, ever-changing environment that nurses work in today.

SLS with VR is the most advanced virtual reality simulation platform for nursing education available in the market; it is the only learning solution that allows instructors to run in-person multiplayer scenarios, enabling learners and observers to come together in a virtual setting and work on the same patient cases.

This could be the future of nurse training and education.

5Helping to build economies, grow business and foster communities: Virtual matchmaking

Exhibitions are key to building economies. As different regions experience varying degrees of restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, trade shows continue to play a role in helping ensure business carries on. Digital and technology solutions which allow events to move online and virtually, and which create business opportunities that would otherwise be done face to face, are vital.

RX’s matchmaking technology allows event participants to make new contacts and meet to do business, face to face, or virtually.

In 2019, 283 events offered proactive matchmaking to around 3.2m customers. Direct customer feedback from around 100,000 customers demonstrates those who use the service tend to have a better event, reporting higher levels of value and satisfaction.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Reed Travel Exhibitions’ Arabian Travel Market Virtual attracted 18,964 participants from 152 countries, generating 14,385 pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings, and attracted 16,929 viewers to its live seminar sessions.

Similarly, Midem Digital Edition brought the global music community together. Participants enjoyed access to over 250 speakers from every music sector, exclusive concerts, unique market intelligence, and the first-ever Artist and Label Services Directory. Within the first week, the event portal had registered 7,969 unique users, generated 1,000+ meeting requests and made over 84,000 business connection recommendations.
