RELX

A European enabler of responsible innovation

RELX is a data and analytics company, created in Europe, rooted in Europe, with 33,000 employees operating globally.

Did you know that our technology helps many of your daily transactions? For example:

  • Our fraud detection software is used when new accounts are set up on many of the most popular digital commerce sites, including Netflix and Uber.
  • When you take medication, it may well have been developed using research published by us.
  • Anytime you take a flight, your airline is probably using our data to analyse its fleet performance.
  • If you are interested in which are the top universities in the world, our data is behind the Times Higher Education’s Global Rankings.
  • If you own a car, it could be our data that helps you get the best insurance deal.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) are what make our analytical tools cutting edge. RELX would love to show you some of the ways in which AI works. Our “AI Insights Hub” offers the opportunity to discuss with our experts the challenges and solutions AI-enabled technologies can offer. If you would like to participate in this exclusive discussion, please take our 2 minute questionnaire to let us know what area you are particularly interested in.

At this time, during the COVID-19 pandemic, RELX is sharing free insights and resources in each of our market segments to support our people, our customers and society, for as long as needed. Combining emerging technology with deep customer understanding and authoritative information we enable faster ways of working, helping to enable professionals like health workers or researchers to focus on combatting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several of the following initiatives, that demonstrate our modest efforts to help those global efforts include:

  • In January 2020, we established the Elsevier COVID-19 Information Center with the latest research and links to more than 20,000 articles from across our 2,500+ journals including Cell and The Lancet, available freely and easily, and in a way that facilitates text and data mining of the articles.
  • Elsevier has developed a Healthcare HUB for use by the general public as well as clinical staff, containing expert information on all health related aspects of the virus, including clinical guidance from health authorities around the world. It has podcasts from leading experts sharing their insights, knowledge and expertise and new features are rolled out regularly.
  • Our LexisNexis Legal and Professional monitoring service, has set up a free COVID-19 Resources Hub that has put together, in real time global curated news, articles and stories from all regions around the world.
  • A new podcast series has been introduced on the RELX SDG Resource Centre exploring the Sustainable Development Goals impact of COVID-19.

Artificial Intelligence & Innovation

RELX is one of the few content companies to manage the transition from print to online successfully. Our primary focus is now on building more advanced electronic decision tools by adding broader data sets and more sophisticated analytics.

Around 9,000 technologists, half of whom are software engineers, work at RELX. Annually, the company spends €1.2bn on technology. The combination of our rich data assets, technology infrastructure and knowledge of how to use next generation technologies, such as machine learning and natural language processing, allows us to create effective solutions for our customers.

According to the OECD, AI “has the potential to improve the welfare and well-being of people, to contribute to positive sustainable global economic activity, to increase innovation and productivity, and to help respond to key global challenges”. It can positively impact sectors like healthcare, agriculture, research, law and financial services. At RELX we think AI will not replace the human work force, but rather improve their work.

“We have been developing AI techniques for a number of years to generate the actionable insights that help our customers make accurate, better informed and more timely decisions. The RELX Emerging Tech Executive Report reveals the adoption of these technologies is now on the rise because organisations have recognised how AI technologies and machine learning can help them optimise systems, reduce costs and stay competitive.”
Vijay Raghavan, Executive Director of the Chief Technology Officer Forum at RELX

The RELX Emerging Tech Executive Report monitors how executives across different industries in the US use and view AI technologies, including machine learning and deep learning. The study, conducted by IPSOS, polls over 1,000 business executives across seven industries (government, healthcare, insurance, legal, science/medical, banking and agriculture) and reveals insights into adoption, levels of workforce AI training and roles for the public and private sectors. 53% of respondents (up 4% from 2018) felt that the US government should increase funding for research and development.

As a member of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI and in our conversations with policymakers, we would ask that they:

  • Continue to build upon the existing principles and laws relevant to AI
  • Are mindful of unintended consequences
  • Ensure any policy intervention be innovation-friendly and technology-neutral
  • Ensure consistency between international norms as AI is global

You will find all this here in our submission to the online consultation on the Commission’s White Paper on AI.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • AI allows RELX to help financial institutions like banks and fintech fight money laundering.  For example, Rabobank has shortened its customer screening process from 15 minutes to 3 minutes per check.

"We have the content, we have the international reach. We have the ambition, we have the people, and we have an incredible capacity to innovate. We can use all of that to advocate for better policies and better action to reach these goals."
Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet, one of our flagship publications

Elsevier's Research4Life provides research for free or at low cost to institutions in the developing world. The partnership's goal is to foster a strong and independent research culture in the developing world – one that is fully integrated into the international research community with sustainable economic development and enhanced quality of life.

Our Proagrica business harnesses data and analytics to improve agricultural yields and ensure sustainable land use. Kaap Agri, one of the largest agricultural co-operatives in South Africa with around 200 outlets and more than 2,500 suppliers, needed supply chain visibility in real-time to deliver control and discipline which in turn enables the business to grow. Proagrica’s system has connected Kaap Agri’s entire supplier base to interact electronically and provides management with a real-time dashboard that delivers visibility of the entire chain and how it is interacting with the core business.

Missing People is the only UK charity dedicated to bringing missing children and adults back together with their families and loved ones. 180,000 people are reported missing each year in the UK. LexisNexis Risk Solutions supports the charity through financial donations and also by providing free access to our LexisNexis TraceIQ product, helping to reconnect people with their missing loved ones. Our support has enabled the charity to re-start and develop its Lost Contact service, which reunites relatives with loved ones who they have lost touch with.

At LexisNexis Legal & Professional, the Rule of Law Impact Tracker brings together data from the World Justice Project, the World Bank and Transparency International to quantify relationships between the rule of law and economic and social indicators. It allows users to explore not only why the rule of law is vitally important to sustainable global development but also what’s truly possible in the world if we work together to affect change.

Reed Exhibitions' events foster communities and improve the efficiency of markets. They provide platforms for supporting the SDGs including World Future Energy Summit, which focuses on affordable and clean energy, and World Travel Market which is dedicated to sustainable tourism.

What might the future bring?

RELX has comprehensive data on issues that have societal relevance like healthcare, research, cybersecurity and fraud. We see it as our role to use that knowledge to provide decision makers with pro bono reports on key societal topics, so they can base their decisions and policies on comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date information. In this way we feel that society is better equipped for the future.

The research ecosystem is undergoing rapid and profound change. This transformation is being fuelled by a wide range of factors, from advances in technology and funding pressures to political uncertainty and population shifts.

In an attempt to understand how these trends might shape the research landscape in the decade ahead, Elsevier joined forces with Ipsos MORI, one of the world’s largest research agencies. Together, we conducted a large-scale, future-scoping and scenario-planning study called Research futures: drivers and scenarios for the next decade. Rather than focusing on which topics will be researched 10 years from now, we looked at how that research will be created and exchanged.

Technological developments can be harnessed for good, but just as easily for nefarious purposes. Cybercrime is a huge problem for today’s digitising society. According to Europol, cybercrime is becoming more aggressive and confrontational.

As part of its regular reporting on international cybersecurity trends, LexisNexis Risk Solutions published its Cybercrime Report for July – December 2019 titled Fraud Without Borders. The report offers global, regional and industry views of fraud activity based on nearly 19bn digital transactions worldwide. Some key findings include that mobile attacks now outnumber desktop attacks, e-commerce industry seeing a significant increase in payment attack rate and that the largest attack volumes continue to originate from Europe and North America.
